Quick answers to common beginner questions:
What is a firewall?
A firewall is a network security system that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing traffic based on predefined rules. It acts as a barrier between a trusted internal network and untrusted external networks.
What does pwd do in Linux?
pwd stands for "print working directory". It shows you the full path of the directory you are currently in — useful for orienting yourself in the terminal.
What is phishing?
Phishing is a social engineering attack where an attacker impersonates a trusted entity (like a bank or a service) to trick users into revealing credentials or clicking malicious links.
What is the difference between encryption and hashing?
Encryption is reversible — a key can decrypt the data. Hashing is one-way — you cannot retrieve the original input from a hash. Passwords are typically stored as hashes, not encrypted.
What is a CTF (Capture The Flag)?
A CTF is a cybersecurity competition where participants solve security challenges to find hidden "flags". They are used for learning and practicing offensive and defensive security skills in a safe, legal environment.
